Doña Bárbara is a Spanish-language telenovela produced by Telemundo Studios and Sony Pictures Television International. It premiered on Telemundo on January 29, 2008, and concluded on May 26, 2008.
The series is based on the classic Venezuelan novel of the same name written by Rómulo Gallegos in 1929. The telenovela adapts the novel's narrative, setting it in the Venezuelan llanos (plains), and focuses on the themes of power, corruption, injustice, and the struggle for civilization against barbarism.
The story revolves around Bárbara Guaimarán, played by Edith González, a woman who suffered immense trauma and abuse in her youth, leading her to become a ruthless and powerful landowner. Santos Luzardo, played by Christian Meier, is a young lawyer who returns to his family's hato (ranch), Altamira, with the intention of selling it.
