Eastern Suburbs (Mumbai)
The Eastern Suburbs of Mumbai comprise a geographically defined region of the city located to the east of the central island city and the Western Suburbs. This area lies on the eastern side of the railway lines that serve Mumbai and extends towards the Thane Creek and the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
The Eastern Suburbs are generally considered to encompass areas such as Kurla, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Mulund, and Chembur, among others. They are characterized by a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial zones. Over the years, significant residential development has occurred in this region, driven by increased affordability compared to South Mumbai and the Western Suburbs, and improved connectivity through the Central Railway line and the Eastern Express Highway.
Historically, the Eastern Suburbs contained large tracts of industrial land and warehousing. However, with Mumbai's changing economic landscape, many industrial areas are being redeveloped for residential and commercial purposes.
The Eastern Suburbs also contain significant natural features, including portions of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, contributing to biodiversity within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The area benefits from various infrastructural projects aimed at improving connectivity and addressing the needs of its growing population. Key infrastructure includes flyovers, roads, and utilities that support residential and commercial activities.
