Skara Brae (album)

Skara Brae is the self-titled debut and only album by the Irish traditional music group Skara Brae, released in 1971. The group consisted of siblings Micheál Ó Domhnaill and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, and Dáithí Sproule. The album is notable for its innovative arrangements and use of close harmony singing in Irish, featuring traditional songs and tunes primarily sung in the Donegal Irish dialect.

The album's title refers to the Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. The choice of name reflects the band's interest in ancient Celtic history and culture, and their desire to connect their music to a broader Celtic tradition.

Skara Brae is considered a significant album in the history of Irish traditional music, influencing many subsequent artists with its unique approach to vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements. While the group disbanded shortly after the album's release, each member went on to have successful individual careers and contribute significantly to the Irish music scene. Micheál Ó Domhnaill and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill later formed The Bothy Band, another highly influential Irish traditional group.
