Land (The Comsat Angels album)

Land is the fourth studio album by the British post-punk band The Comsat Angels, released in 1983. It marked a departure from their earlier, more atmospheric and angular sound towards a more accessible and commercially oriented rock style. The album was produced by Mick Glossop and featured a noticeably cleaner and more polished sound compared to their previous work.

The change in direction was reportedly driven by pressure from their record label, Polydor, to achieve greater chart success. This shift in sound proved controversial among some of the band's original fanbase, who preferred the darker and more experimental nature of their first three albums.

While Land did not achieve significant commercial success, failing to chart in either the UK or the US, it did generate the singles "Independence Day" and "Island Heart." "Independence Day" became one of the band's more well-known tracks, often included on compilation albums.

The album is considered by some to be an example of a band sacrificing artistic integrity in pursuit of commercial success, while others view it as a natural evolution of their sound. Critical reception at the time was mixed, and retrospective reviews continue to be divided.
