USS Mississinewa (AO-59)

The USS Mississinewa (AO-59) was a Neosho-class fleet oiler that served with the United States Navy during World War II. Named for the Mississinewa River in Indiana, she was commissioned in May 1944 and played a vital role in refueling the Pacific Fleet during the latter stages of the war.

The Mississinewa participated in numerous operations, including the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Battle of Leyte Gulf, providing essential fuel to warships, aircraft carriers, and other vessels. Her service was relatively brief but crucial to the Allied war effort.

On November 20, 1944, while at Ulithi Atoll, the Mississinewa was attacked by a Japanese Kaiten manned torpedo, piloted by Sub-Lieutenant Sekio Nishina. The torpedo struck the ship near her fuel tanks, causing a massive explosion and fire. Despite efforts to control the damage, the Mississinewa sank later that day.

The wreck of the USS Mississinewa was discovered in 2001 by a team led by Patrick Scannon. It remains at the bottom of Ulithi Lagoon, serving as a war grave and a reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II.
