Annafest
Annafest is an annual folk festival held in Forchheim, Bavaria, Germany. It traditionally begins on the Friday before St. Anna's Day (July 26th) and lasts for eleven days, ending on the last Monday of July.
The festival is characterized by its unique location in and around the "Kellerwald" (cellar forest), a network of beer cellars carved into the hillside of the Forchheim castle mountain. These cellars, originally used for storing beer at cool temperatures, are opened to the public during Annafest, serving beer directly from the keg.
Visitors sit on benches and tables set up in the Kellerwald, often under the shade of chestnut trees, enjoying beer, traditional Bavarian food, and music. The atmosphere is festive and convivial, attracting locals and tourists alike.
Annafest is one of the largest folk festivals in Upper Franconia and a significant cultural event in the region. Its history stretches back centuries, solidifying its place as a cherished tradition. The specific origins of the festival are debated, but it is generally associated with celebrations and pilgrimages to St. Anna.
Besides the Kellerwald, Annafest includes a fairground with rides, games, and food stalls in the surrounding area. This expands the festival's appeal and offers entertainment for all ages. The combination of the unique cellar setting and the traditional fairground elements contribute to the festival's distinctive character.
