Garage rock

Garage rock is a raw and energetic form of rock and roll that originated in the United States and Canada in the early to mid-1960s. The name derives from the perception that many of the bands practiced in suburban garages, often with limited equipment and musical experience. It is generally characterized by simple chord progressions, often featuring distorted electric guitars, and raw, sometimes amateurish vocals and production.

Garage rock is often considered a predecessor to punk rock and other later forms of alternative rock. While it shared some musical features with the British Invasion bands of the time, garage rock tended to be less polished and more aggressive.

Key characteristics of garage rock include:

  • Simple Song Structures: Typically utilizing basic chord progressions and repetitive structures.
  • Distorted Guitars: Fuzztones and other distortion effects are common.
  • Amateurism: A raw, unpolished sound, often stemming from limited recording equipment and musical skill.
  • Energetic Performances: Emphasizing high energy and a rebellious attitude.
  • Themes: Common themes include cars, girls, school, and social frustration.

The first wave of garage rock bands emerged primarily in the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest, and Texas. While many garage rock bands achieved only local or regional success, a few had national hits. The genre experienced a resurgence in the 1980s and continues to influence contemporary music.
