Cinyps (Libya)

The Cinyps was a river in ancient Libya, known today as Wadi Khanafseen. It was located in the Syrtica region (present-day Gulf of Sidra area). The Cinyps was described by several classical authors, including Herodotus, Pliny the Elder, and Virgil, who mentioned its fertile valley and its association with agriculture, particularly the cultivation of olives. The river's location is generally agreed to be in the area of modern-day Libya, but the precise identification of the ancient Cinyps with specific modern wadis remains a matter of some scholarly debate due to changes in the landscape and river courses over time. The area was considered part of Tripolitania in Roman times. The Cinyps valley was known for its production of grain and other agricultural products, contributing to the region's prosperity.
