John Dalby (painter)

John Dalby (1795-1847) was a British painter, primarily known for his equestrian and sporting art. He was active in Yorkshire and London, producing portraits of racehorses, hunters, and other animals, often commissioned by wealthy patrons involved in the racing and hunting scenes.

Dalby was born in York, England, and initially trained under his father, David Dalby the Elder, who was also an animal painter. He established his own independent practice, quickly gaining recognition for his ability to accurately depict the anatomy and characteristics of horses.

His works are characterized by a realistic and detailed style, capturing the dynamism and spirit of the sporting world. He often depicted horses in action, whether racing, hunting, or simply in their stables. He also painted portraits of prominent figures involved in equestrian sports alongside their favored animals.

Dalby exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy and the British Institution in London. While his career was relatively short, due to his early death at the age of 52, his paintings remain valuable historical records of the horses, people, and sporting culture of 19th-century Britain. His work is represented in both private and public collections.
