French submarine Requin (1924)
The Requin was a French Navy submarine, the lead boat of the Requin-class, built in the 1920s. Commissioned in 1924, the Requin served in the Mediterranean Sea and participated in various fleet exercises and patrols during the interwar period. The Requin-class submarines were designed as coastal defense submarines, with moderate range and armament. The Requin was armed with torpedoes and a deck gun.
During World War II, after the Fall of France in 1940, the Requin initially remained under the control of the Vichy French government. She was later scuttled in Toulon in November 1942 to prevent her capture by German forces during Operation Anton. The wreck of the Requin remains in Toulon harbor. The Requin represents an important example of interwar French submarine design and its fate reflects the tumultuous events of World War II in France.
