Lagunette

A lagunette is a small, shallow body of water separated from a larger lagoon by a narrow strip of land or a raised feature, such as a sandbar or reef. Lagunettes are typically characterized by their limited depth, often only a few meters, and are often more influenced by tidal action and freshwater input than the larger lagoon they are connected to. Their water salinity can vary greatly, from brackish to hypersaline, depending on the degree of connection to the open sea and the amount of freshwater runoff. Because of their sheltered nature, lagunettes can provide important habitats for juvenile fish, invertebrates, and wading birds. They are also susceptible to environmental changes such as pollution, sedimentation, and sea-level rise.
