Poseidon (horse)

Poseidon was a prominent American Thoroughbred racehorse foaled in 1903. He was sired by Spendthrift and his dam was Fleeting Beauty. Poseidon is best known for winning the Kentucky Derby in 1906 and the Belmont Stakes in the same year, making him a dual-classic winner.

Poseidon's racing career, though relatively short, was marked by impressive victories against some of the top horses of his era. He was trained by John Whalen and owned by Harry Payne Whitney. After a successful two-year-old season, he entered the 1906 Kentucky Derby as a strong contender. He won the Derby by a comfortable margin, establishing himself as a leading three-year-old.

Following his Kentucky Derby victory, Poseidon went on to win the Belmont Stakes, further solidifying his reputation as a talented and versatile racehorse capable of excelling at different distances.

Despite his successes, Poseidon's career was cut short due to injury. He was retired to stud, where he sired several notable offspring, contributing to the Thoroughbred breed. Poseidon is remembered as one of the outstanding racehorses of the early 20th century and a significant figure in American racing history.
