Manganese(II) chloride
Manganese(II) chloride is the chemical compound with the formula MnCl2. It exists in anhydrous form, as well as several hydrates. The most common is the tetrahydrate, MnCl2·4H2O. This salt is a pink-colored solid that is highly soluble in water.
Manganese(II) chloride is used in the laboratory and industrially as a precursor to other manganese compounds. For example, it is used to produce methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT), an antiknock additive for gasoline. It also serves as a catalyst in some chemical reactions.
In the laboratory, MnCl2 is often used to prepare anhydrous manganese halides through reaction with other halide salts.
Manganese(II) chloride is considered toxic if ingested or inhaled in large quantities. It should be handled with appropriate safety precautions.
