Vavilov (crater)

Vavilov is a lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon. It is located to the northwest of the large crater Hertzsprung, and northeast of the slightly smaller Backlund.

Description:

Vavilov is a heavily eroded and somewhat distorted crater, showing the effects of multiple subsequent impacts. Its rim is uneven and displays considerable wear, with several small craters lying along its edge. The interior floor is relatively level, but marked by a number of smaller craters. The crater lacks a central peak.

Location and Context:

Its far-side location makes it difficult to observe directly from Earth. The terrain surrounding Vavilov is heavily cratered, typical of the lunar far side. It is situated within the Hertzsprung Basin.

Name:

The crater is named in honor of Nikolai Vavilov, a prominent Soviet botanist and geneticist.
