Marar (caste)
The Marar are a Hindu caste traditionally found in the state of Kerala, India. They are primarily associated with the maintenance and performance of rituals and services in temples, particularly related to percussion instruments.
Historically, Marars held a significant role in temple ceremonies, especially in playing instruments like the chenda, mridangam, and idakka. They were often hereditary temple servants, responsible for the upkeep of the musical aspects of religious events. Their presence and skill were considered essential for the proper conduct of festivals and daily rituals.
Over time, with societal changes and the decline of traditional temple patronage, the economic circumstances and occupational patterns of the Marar community have diversified. While many still maintain their association with temple music and rituals, others have entered various other professions.
The Marar community is organized along traditional caste lines, with endogamy being generally practiced. Further research is needed to determine detailed sub-divisions, social customs, and contemporary socio-economic conditions. Information regarding specific sub-groups, community organizations, and ongoing efforts to preserve their cultural heritage is currently limited in readily available sources.
