William Collier (colonist)

William Collier (c. 1585 – 1671) was an English merchant, investor, and prominent member of the Plymouth Colony. He arrived in Plymouth in 1633 and quickly became a leading figure in the colony's economic and political life.

Collier was heavily involved in trade and land acquisition, amassing considerable wealth during his time in the New World. He participated in the Kennebec trading post, a vital source of fur and other goods for the colony. He was also instrumental in the purchase and development of several land tracts, including Duxbury and Bridgewater.

Beyond his business endeavors, Collier held numerous public offices. He served as an Assistant to the Governor for many years, acting as an advisor and magistrate. His involvement in legal matters and governance played a crucial role in shaping the colony's policies and resolving disputes. He was known for his strong convictions and his commitment to maintaining order and justice within the colony.

Collier was a staunch supporter of religious orthodoxy and played a significant role in the persecution of religious dissenters within Plymouth Colony, particularly Quakers. His views reflected the prevailing Puritan beliefs of the time, which prioritized religious uniformity and discouraged deviation from established doctrines.
