Granard is an ancient settlement, with evidence of habitation dating back to the Neolithic period. It is historically significant as the site of a motte-and-bailey castle, Granard Motte, one of the largest and tallest in Ireland. The Motte, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, is believed to have been constructed by the Anglo-Normans in the late 12th century.
The town was officially founded as a borough in 1619 by Sir Francis Aungier. Granard experienced periods of prosperity and decline, linked to broader economic and political events in Ireland.
