Sixteen (card game)

Sixteen is a simple card game typically played with two or more players using a standard 52-card deck. The objective of the game is to be the first player to reach a total point value of sixteen or more, achieved by strategically collecting and laying down cards.

Gameplay:

The deck is shuffled and a predetermined number of cards (usually three or four) are dealt face down to each player. The remaining cards form the stock pile, and the top card of the stock pile is flipped face up to start the discard pile.

Players take turns performing one of the following actions:

  • Draw: Take the top card from either the stock pile or the discard pile.
  • Lay Down: If a player has a card or combination of cards totaling sixteen or more, they can lay them face up on the table. These cards must be laid down at once; a player cannot add to a laydown on subsequent turns.

After drawing a card, a player must discard one card face up onto the discard pile, ending their turn.

Card Values:

The card values are as follows:

  • Ace: 1 point
  • 2 through 10: Face value (2-10 points)
  • Jack: 11 points
  • Queen: 12 points
  • King: 13 points

Winning the Game:

The first player to lay down cards totaling sixteen or more points wins the game. If no player is able to lay down cards totaling sixteen or more after the stock pile has been exhausted, the game is considered a draw.

Variations:

Numerous variations exist, often involving alterations to card values, the number of cards dealt, or the inclusion of special card actions (e.g., cards that allow a player to steal from another player, skip a turn, or look at a future card from the draw pile). Some variations may also allow players to "freeze" the discard pile, preventing other players from drawing from it for a turn. These variations are usually determined before the start of the game.
