Tritaxis (foraminifera)

Tritaxis is a genus of extinct agglutinated foraminifera belonging to the family Eggerellidae. These single-celled organisms are characterized by their trochospiral test (shell) in the early stages of development, transitioning to a triserial (three rows of chambers) or biserial (two rows of chambers) arrangement in the later stages. The test is constructed by cementing together sand grains and other available particles from the surrounding environment, creating a rough, agglutinated texture. Tritaxis are typically found in marine sediments dating back to the Jurassic period and extending into the Cretaceous period. They are significant microfossils used in biostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental studies due to their distinctive morphology and relatively common occurrence in certain geological formations.
