French ship Duguay-Trouin (1788)

The Duguay-Trouin was a 74-gun ship of the line of the French Navy, launched in 1788. She was named in honour of René Duguay-Trouin, a famous French privateer and admiral.

She served during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars, participating in several significant naval engagements. Notably, she was present at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, where she fought bravely against the British fleet. While not captured at Trafalgar, she sustained significant damage during the battle.

The Duguay-Trouin remained in service until she was eventually decommissioned and broken up in the early 19th century. She represents a typical example of a large, heavily armed warship that played a crucial role in French naval power during a period of intense maritime conflict. Her career reflects the wider naval history of France in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, showcasing the challenges and strategies employed in maintaining a powerful fleet.
