Nichelle
Nichelle Nichols (1932-2022) was an American actress, singer, and dancer. She is best known for her portrayal of Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, the communications officer, in the original Star Trek television series (1966-1969) and subsequent Star Trek films.
Nichols' role as Uhura was groundbreaking for its time, as she was one of the first African American women to hold a prominent position on American television. Her character was depicted as intelligent, capable, and integral to the Star Trek crew, defying racial stereotypes that were prevalent in the media. Martin Luther King Jr. personally encouraged her to stay on the show when she considered leaving, recognizing the importance of her representation.
Beyond Star Trek, Nichols worked as a recruiter for NASA, helping to encourage women and minorities to join the space program. She continued to be an advocate for space exploration and diversity throughout her life, inspiring generations of scientists and engineers. She also appeared in other television shows and films, and released several albums of her music.
