USS Harder (SS-568)

The USS Harder (SS-568) was a proposed United States Navy submarine. She was intended to be a Tang-class submarine, but her construction was cancelled before being laid down. Had she been completed, she would have been the second US Navy ship named USS Harder, the first being the highly decorated World War II submarine USS Harder (SS-257). The cancellation of her construction reflects the post-World War II reductions in military spending and a shift in submarine design toward nuclear power. The contract for her construction was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation on 21 March 1955, but was cancelled on 7 July 1955. No keel was ever laid.
