Edgcote

Edgcote is a village and civil parish in West Northamptonshire, England. It is located approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) northeast of Banbury and 9 miles (14.5 km) west of Brackley.

The village lies on a ridge overlooking the valley of the River Cherwell. Historically, Edgcote was part of the ancient hundred of Chipping Warden.

The Domesday Book of 1086 records the village as "Edescote". The name is believed to derive from the Old English "Ecga's cot", meaning "Ecga's cottage" or "Ecga's shelter".

Edgcote is known for the Battle of Edgcote Moor, also known as the Battle of Banbury, which took place nearby in 1469 during the Wars of the Roses. The battle was fought between the forces of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick and King Edward IV. Warwick's forces were victorious. A stone monument, erected in 1969 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the battle, is located near the village.

The parish church of St. James the Great dates back to the 13th century, with later additions and alterations. It is a Grade II* listed building.

At the 2011 census, the population of the civil parish was 133.
