HMS E17
HMS E17 was a British E-class submarine built by Vickers, Barrow-in-Furness. She was launched on 22 November 1915 and commissioned in January 1916. During World War I, she served in the North Sea.
On 6 January 1916, just a few days after commissioning, HMS E17 ran aground on the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog in dense fog. As the Netherlands was neutral during the war, the crew were interned, and the submarine remained stuck on the shore. Various salvage attempts by both the British and Dutch were unsuccessful. The wreck was eventually broken up in situ during the 1920s. There were no casualties reported during the grounding.
