Air America (radio network)

Air America was an American progressive talk radio network that operated from March 31, 2004, to January 21, 2010. It was founded by a group of investors with the goal of providing a liberal counterpoint to the predominantly conservative talk radio landscape in the United States.

The network featured a lineup of hosts including Al Franken, Rachel Maddow, Janeane Garofalo, Marc Maron, and Randi Rhodes. Its programming covered a range of political and social issues from a progressive perspective, featuring news commentary, interviews, and call-in segments.

Air America struggled financially throughout its existence, facing challenges related to management, funding, and audience reach. The network filed for bankruptcy twice, in 2006 and again in 2010, ultimately leading to its closure.

Despite its relatively short lifespan, Air America played a role in the development of progressive media in the United States. It provided a platform for voices that were often underrepresented in mainstream media and contributed to the national political conversation. While the network itself ceased broadcasting, some of its former hosts went on to achieve success in other media outlets, continuing to offer progressive commentary and analysis.
