Baiza Bai

Baiza Bai (c. 1784 – 1863) was a prominent Maratha ruler and banker of the early 19th century in Gwalior State, India. She was the widow of Daulat Rao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior.

After her husband's death in 1827, Baiza Bai assumed control of the state as regent for the adopted heir, Jankoji Rao Scindia II. Her regency was marked by political maneuvering, administrative reforms, and significant financial control. She was known for her astute management of Gwalior's treasury and her involvement in land revenue collection.

Baiza Bai was also a formidable military leader, actively participating in battles and leading troops. Her opposition to the British East India Company's influence led to conflicts, culminating in her defeat at the Battle of Maharajpur in 1843. Following this defeat, she was forced to relinquish her power and left Gwalior.

She spent her later years in religious pursuits and philanthropic activities. Baiza Bai is remembered for her strong leadership, financial acumen, and resistance against British expansion. Her legacy remains significant in the history of Gwalior State.
