Elisha

Elisha (אֱלִישָׁע, ʼĔlîšaʻ, meaning "My God is salvation") was a prophet and wonder-worker in the Hebrew Bible, specifically in the Books of Kings. He was a disciple and successor of the prophet Elijah. His ministry is dated to the 9th century BCE.

Elisha's prophetic career began when Elijah anointed him as his successor while Elisha was plowing with oxen. Elisha then followed Elijah, serving as his attendant until Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha then received a double portion of Elijah's spirit.

Throughout his prophetic ministry, Elisha performed numerous miracles. These included: dividing the Jordan River, purifying the water supply of Jericho, providing water for the armies of Israel and Judah, multiplying a widow's oil, raising a child from the dead, healing Naaman the Syrian of leprosy, and causing an axe head to float.

Elisha's prophecies also had political and military significance. He predicted victories for the Israelite armies and advised kings on military strategy. He also played a role in the overthrow of the Syrian dynasty.

Elisha is considered a major prophet in Judaism and is revered in Christianity and Islam. His stories are often interpreted as demonstrating God's power and care for his people. His prophetic role highlights the importance of obedience to God and the consequences of disobedience. He is remembered as a figure of healing, provision, and divine intervention.
