Jack Gregory (cricketer)

Jack Gregory (1895-1958) was an Australian cricketer who played in 24 Test matches between 1920 and 1928. A right-arm fast bowler and hard-hitting lower-order batsman, Gregory was a key member of the Australian team during the "Golden Age" of Australian cricket.

Born in North Sydney, New South Wales, Gregory came from a cricketing family; his father, Syd Gregory, also played Test cricket for Australia. He served in the Australian Imperial Force during World War I, which delayed the start of his first-class career.

Gregory made his Test debut against England in 1920-21, and quickly established himself as a dangerous bowler due to his express pace and ability to swing the ball. He formed a formidable bowling partnership with Ted McDonald. He was known for his aggressive style of play, both with bat and ball.

One of Gregory's most memorable performances came in the 1921 Ashes series, where he took 12 wickets in the second Test at Lord's. He also played a crucial innings of 119 in the fifth Test, helping Australia secure the series.

As a batsman, Gregory was known for his powerful hitting and ability to score quickly. He scored one Test century, 133 against South Africa in 1921-22. He was also a useful fielder, typically stationed in the slips.

Gregory retired from Test cricket in 1928. He remained involved in cricket after his playing career, working as a selector and commentator. He died in Sydney in 1958.
