USS SC-3
USS SC-3 was a SC-1-class submarine chaser built for the United States Navy during World War I.
SC-3 was launched on April 20, 1917, by the New York Navy Yard. Commissioned in 1917, SC-3 was assigned to the European waters, primarily serving in the anti-submarine patrols off the coast of France. These patrol duties were crucial in protecting Allied shipping from German U-boat attacks.
Following the end of World War I, SC-3 returned to the United States. Details about her post-war activities are limited, but like many submarine chasers, she was likely decommissioned and sold or otherwise disposed of by the Navy in the early 1920s as part of the post-war demobilization.
The SC-1 class submarine chasers, including SC-3, were small, wooden-hulled vessels designed for rapid production and deployment to combat the U-boat threat. They were relatively lightly armed, typically equipped with a 3-inch deck gun and depth charges. While not particularly sophisticated, these vessels played a vital role in protecting Allied shipping lanes during the war.
