Frihamnen
Frihamnen is a former free port area located in Stockholm, Sweden. Situated on the island of Norra Djurgården, it was one of Stockholm's most important port facilities for much of the 20th century. Established in 1919 and operating as a free port until 1990, Frihamnen allowed for the import and export of goods without customs duties within its designated zone.
The area is now undergoing significant redevelopment, transforming from a primarily industrial and logistics hub into a mixed-use district with housing, offices, retail, and cultural spaces. Retaining some of its historical character, including several preserved warehouses and port buildings, the redevelopment aims to integrate Frihamnen into the broader urban fabric of Stockholm.
Key features of the redeveloped Frihamnen include plans for extensive waterfront promenades, parks, and public spaces. The area is intended to become a sustainable and vibrant part of the city, contributing to Stockholm's growth and offering diverse opportunities for residents and businesses. The proximity to other growing areas like Norra Djurgårdsstaden makes Frihamnen a strategically important area for urban development.
