Albert Cooper (Canadian politician)

Albert Cooper (born July 20, 1944) is a Canadian politician who served as a Senator representing the province of Alberta.

Born in Claresholm, Alberta, Cooper was appointed to the Senate of Canada on December 15, 1983, by Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. He was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party and later the Conservative Party of Canada following the merger of the Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance.

During his time in the Senate, Cooper served in various leadership positions, including as Deputy Leader of the Opposition and as Speaker of the Senate. He was the youngest person ever to be appointed Speaker of the Senate. He chaired numerous committees focusing on matters such as energy, natural resources, and Aboriginal affairs.

Cooper retired from the Senate on July 20, 2019, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75. Since his retirement, he has remained involved in public life through various advisory roles and consulting work.
