The Hound of the Baskervilles (2002 film)
The Hound of the Baskervilles (2002 film) is a Canadian made-for-television mystery film adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous Sherlock Holmes novel The Hound of the Baskervilles. Directed by Rodney Gibbons, it stars Richard Roxburgh as Sherlock Holmes and Ian Hart as Dr. Watson.
The film follows the familiar plot of the novel, in which Holmes and Watson investigate the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville and the alleged curse of a monstrous hound haunting the Baskerville family. Their investigation leads them to Dartmoor, where they encounter a cast of suspicious characters and uncover the truth behind the legend.
This adaptation stays relatively faithful to the source material, although some elements are condensed or altered for the television format. Ian Hart's portrayal of Dr. Watson is notable for being more assertive and proactive than some earlier interpretations, while Richard Roxburgh's Holmes presents a sharp and observant intellect.
The film premiered on the Canadian television network Showcase in 2002 and has since been broadcast and released on DVD in various regions. It is considered a competent, though perhaps not groundbreaking, adaptation of the classic Sherlock Holmes story.
