2020 United States Olympic Trials (marathon)
The 2020 United States Olympic Trials for the marathon were held on February 29, 2020, in Atlanta, Georgia. The races determined the athletes who would represent the United States in the marathon at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan (subsequently postponed to 2021).
The men's race was won by Galen Rupp in a time of 2:09:20. Jacob Riley finished second in 2:10:02, and Abdi Abdirahman placed third in 2:10:03. These three runners qualified for the Olympic team.
The women's race was won by Aliphine Tuliamuk in a time of 2:27:23. Molly Seidel finished second in 2:27:31, and Sally Kipyego placed third in 2:28:52. These three runners qualified for the Olympic team.
The race took place on a challenging, hilly course that consisted of three loops winding through downtown Atlanta. The weather conditions on race day were favorable, with cool temperatures and low humidity. However, the course's elevation changes presented a significant test for the athletes. The event drew a large crowd of spectators and generated considerable media attention. The actual participation in the Olympics was later affected due to circumstances involving doping bans for some qualified athletes.
