John Perkins House (Castine, Maine)
The John Perkins House is a historic house located in Castine, Maine. Built circa 1763, it is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town and a well-preserved example of late colonial architecture. The house is a 2 1/2-story wood frame structure with a hip roof, clapboard siding, and a central chimney. Its facade is five bays wide, with a central entrance framed by pilasters and a simple entablature.
The house is significant for its association with John Perkins, a prominent local merchant and shipowner. Perkins played an important role in the town's maritime economy during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He owned several ships that traded with ports throughout the Atlantic world.
The John Perkins House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It remains a private residence. The architectural details, particularly the well-preserved exterior, provide valuable insight into the building practices and aesthetic preferences of the period.
