USS Abbot (DD-184)

The USS Abbot (DD-184) was a Wickes-class destroyer in the United States Navy during World War II. Named for Rear Admiral Joel Abbot, a distinguished officer in the War of 1812, she was commissioned in 1919 and served primarily in the Atlantic.

During the interwar period, the Abbot participated in various fleet exercises and training maneuvers. As the threat of World War II loomed, she was assigned to convoy escort duty, protecting vital shipping lanes from German U-boats.

Throughout the war, USS Abbot served actively in the Atlantic theater, engaging in numerous anti-submarine patrols and escorting convoys across the ocean. She earned distinction for her role in protecting Allied shipping.

Following the cessation of hostilities, USS Abbot was decommissioned in 1945 and subsequently scrapped, marking the end of her service to the United States Navy. Although she did not participate in major fleet engagements, her consistent and vital role in protecting Allied shipping during World War II earned her a place in naval history.
