Sibel (film)

Sibel is a 2018 French-German-Luxembourgish drama film directed by Çağla Zencirci and Guillaume Giovanetti. The film tells the story of Sibel, a young woman who lives in a remote village in Turkey. Sibel is mute, but she communicates using a local sign language. Ostracized by her community, she spends her time hunting a wolf said to be roaming the nearby woods.

The film explores themes of communication, prejudice, female empowerment, and societal expectations. Sibel's inability to speak verbally leads to misunderstandings and isolation, but it also forces her to find alternative ways of connecting with others. The film portrays the challenges faced by women in traditional societies and Sibel's struggle for independence and self-acceptance.

Sibel premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in 2018, where it won the Europa Cinemas Label Award for Best European Film. It has since been screened at numerous film festivals worldwide and has received critical acclaim for its poignant storytelling and its portrayal of a strong female character.
