HMS Urchin (R99)
HMS Urchin (R99) was a U-class destroyer of the British Royal Navy. Built by Vickers-Armstrongs at Barrow-in-Furness, she was launched on 22 May 1943 and commissioned on 30 December 1943. Urchin served primarily in the Arctic and the North Atlantic during World War II, participating in convoy escort duties, protecting convoys from German U-boat attacks and surface raiders.
Urchin was involved in several notable operations. She was part of the escort for Convoy RA 59 in March 1944, and later that year was involved in the sinking of U-473 in company with other ships. She also participated in attacks on German shipping off the Norwegian coast.
Following the end of World War II, Urchin was placed in reserve. In 1952, she was transferred to the Norwegian Navy and renamed Tromsø. Tromsø served with the Norwegian Navy until 1965 when she was scrapped.
Her wartime service earned Urchin several battle honours, including: Arctic 1944-45 and Normandy 1944.
