Geber (crater)

Geber is a prominent lunar impact crater located in the rugged highlands of the Moon's southern hemisphere. It lies to the southwest of the larger crater Isidorus and northwest of the crater Tycho.

Geber exhibits a well-defined, circular rim with relatively little erosion, indicating it is a comparatively young feature in lunar terms. The interior walls are terraced and slope down to a somewhat uneven floor. A small central peak rises from the crater floor, characteristic of many lunar impact craters.

The crater is named after the 8th-century Persian polymath Jābir ibn Hayyān, often Latinized as Geber. He was a renowned alchemist and scientist, whose work had a significant influence on the development of chemistry in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Geber is readily observable through telescopes and even binoculars, particularly during periods of favorable illumination, such as during the first or last quarter of the lunar cycle. Its distinctive shape and location make it a useful landmark for lunar observers.
