Old Brick Church (Bacon's Castle, Virginia)

The Old Brick Church, also known as the Burwell's Bay Church or simply "The Brick Church," is a historic church located near Bacon's Castle in Surry County, Virginia. It is significant for its architectural features and its long association with the early colonial history of the area.

Constructed in the mid-18th century, circa 1751-1757, the church stands as a well-preserved example of Georgian ecclesiastical architecture in Virginia. Its design incorporates elements of both the Georgian and earlier vernacular building traditions. The church is characterized by its symmetrical facade, brick construction (Flemish bond brickwork), arched windows, and a classical pediment over the entrance.

The Old Brick Church served the residents of the surrounding plantation community and was closely associated with the prominent families of the region, including the Allen and Burwell families. Nathaniel Bacon, whose rebellion led to the area’s main historical site being known as Bacon's Castle (although Bacon never lived there), predates the construction of the church, but the area’s early settlers are associated with the land the church was built on.

The church originally featured a three-tiered "wine glass" pulpit, typical of Anglican churches of the period, which was later replaced. The interior has undergone some alterations over the years, but it retains its historical character.

The Old Brick Church continues to be used for services and special events and is a recognized landmark and important part of Surry County's historical and cultural heritage. It is often visited by those interested in colonial Virginia history and architecture. The church and its surrounding graveyard provide insight into the lives and beliefs of the people who shaped the early history of the region.
