The origins of the family's business empire lie in the manufacturing of industrial machinery, particularly under the leadership of Torcuato Di Tella (1892-1948). The company, SIAM Di Tella, became a major player in Argentina's import-substitution industrialization efforts. SIAM Di Tella produced a wide range of goods, from refrigerators and household appliances to automobiles (most notably, the Di Tella automobile, a licensed version of the Morris Oxford).

After Torcuato Di Tella's death, his sons, Guido and Torcuato, continued the family's business ventures and expanded their involvement in cultural and intellectual pursuits.

The Instituto Torcuato Di Tella (ITDT), founded in 1958, is a renowned academic and cultural institution established through the family's foundation.
