Popular Unity (Brazil)
Popular Unity (Unidade Popular, UP) is a Brazilian political party founded in 2016 and officially recognized by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) in 2019. It is a Marxist-Leninist party, advocating for socialist revolution and a people's democratic government.
UP distinguishes itself through its commitment to radical social change and its focus on grassroots organizing, particularly among marginalized communities such as the landless, homeless, and working class. Its platform centers around issues like agrarian reform, nationalization of key industries, workers' rights, and an end to social inequality and all forms of oppression.
The party's ideology is heavily influenced by figures like Vladimir Lenin, Che Guevara, and other revolutionary thinkers. They view capitalism as the root cause of Brazil's problems and advocate for its replacement with a socialist system.
Popular Unity has participated in recent Brazilian elections, fielding candidates for various offices, including the presidency. It generally performs better in areas with strong social movements and a history of left-wing activism. The party actively seeks to build alliances with other left-wing organizations and social movements in Brazil. Its electoral performance to date has been relatively modest, but UP continues to work towards expanding its base of support and promoting its revolutionary agenda.
