Alexander Martin (Scottish minister)

Alexander Martin (1857-1933) was a Scottish minister and academic. He served as Principal of New College, Edinburgh, from 1918 to 1933. He was a prominent figure in the United Free Church of Scotland, and later in the reunited Church of Scotland after the union of 1929.

Born in Aberdeen, Martin was educated at the University of Aberdeen and New College, Edinburgh. He was ordained as a minister in the United Free Church in 1883, serving initially in the parish of Hope Street United Free Church, Glasgow. He later moved to Dundee, serving as minister of Chalmers United Free Church.

Martin was a respected theologian and preacher. His theological stance was generally considered orthodox, emphasizing the importance of evangelical Christianity and biblical authority. He was known for his clear and engaging preaching style.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Martin was involved in theological education. He taught at the United Free Church College in Glasgow before being appointed Principal of New College, Edinburgh, succeeding Alexander Whyte. As Principal, he oversaw the transition of New College following the union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland. His leadership was instrumental in shaping the theological curriculum and fostering a sense of unity within the newly formed Church of Scotland.

Martin authored several books and articles on theological and religious topics, including works on the Atonement and the Holy Spirit. He also contributed to various theological journals. His contributions to Scottish church life and theological discourse were significant.
