USS Memphis (1862)
The USS Memphis was a sidewheel steamer acquired by the Union Navy during the American Civil War. She served in the Mississippi Squadron and played a role in various operations on the Mississippi River and its tributaries.
Originally a merchant vessel, she was purchased by the Navy in 1862 and commissioned as the USS Memphis. Her primary duties included patrolling the rivers, supporting Union Army operations, and engaging Confederate vessels.
The Memphis participated in actions such as the Yazoo River Expedition and the siege of Vicksburg. Her shallow draft made her well-suited for navigating the often treacherous waters of the Mississippi River system.
In July 1863, the Memphis, along with other Union vessels, engaged Confederate forces at Yazoo City, Mississippi. She was instrumental in repelling a Confederate attack and securing the area for the Union.
After the Civil War, the USS Memphis was decommissioned. She was sold at auction in 1865 and returned to civilian service. Her later history is less documented, but she likely continued to operate as a commercial vessel for some time.
