Bothey

A bothy is a basic mountain hut or shelter, usually left unlocked and available for anyone to use free of charge. Botheys are most commonly found in remote, mountainous areas of Scotland, Northern England, and Wales, but similar structures exist in other parts of the world under different names. They provide simple accommodation, typically consisting of a roof, four walls, and a raised sleeping platform.

Botheys are traditionally old estate buildings, such as shepherd's huts, abandoned farmhouses, or even derelict crofts, that have been repurposed as shelters for walkers, climbers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. They are maintained by volunteers, often through organizations like the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA).

While providing shelter, botheys are very basic. They rarely have electricity, running water, or sanitation facilities. Users are expected to leave the bothy clean and tidy for the next occupants, and to follow a "bothy code" which emphasizes respect for the environment, the bothy itself, and other users. This code often includes guidelines such as carrying out all rubbish, keeping fires small and controlled, and avoiding disturbance to wildlife or livestock.

Botheys offer a unique experience, providing a free and independent means of exploring remote landscapes. Their upkeep relies on the responsible behavior of those who use them. They represent a tradition of shared access to the outdoors and a spirit of self-reliance.
