Klahoose
The Klahoose First Nation is a Coast Salish Indigenous group located in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. They are part of the larger Coast Salish cultural and linguistic group. The Klahoose people traditionally inhabited the area around Cortes Island, Desolation Sound, and the mainland coast near what is now Powell River.
The Klahoose, along with the Tla'amin (Sliammon) and Homalco First Nations, are known as the Three Sister Nations. They share cultural and linguistic similarities, and have historically maintained close relationships.
The Klahoose language is a dialect of the Comox language, a Coast Salish language. Language revitalization efforts are underway to preserve and promote the Klahoose language for future generations.
Today, the Klahoose First Nation has a reserve community at Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island. They are actively involved in resource management, economic development, and cultural preservation within their traditional territory. The Klahoose are governed by an elected Chief and Council.
