Guardian (web series)

Guardian, also known as Zhen Hun (镇魂), is a 2018 Chinese web series based on the danmei (boys' love) novel of the same name by Priest. The series blends elements of fantasy, crime, mystery, and science fiction.

The plot centers on Zhao Yunlan, the head of a special investigation department, and Shen Wei, a reserved professor. Together, they investigate supernatural cases while uncovering a conspiracy spanning thousands of years. Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei are initially drawn to each other through a series of mysterious events, and their relationship gradually deepens as they work together to solve crimes and protect the human world from otherworldly threats. The show subtly alludes to a romantic connection between the two male leads, navigating Chinese censorship restrictions on overt depictions of same-sex relationships.

The series gained considerable popularity in China and internationally, leading to increased recognition for its lead actors, Bai Yu (as Zhao Yunlan) and Zhu Yilong (as Shen Wei). It is notable for its complex mythology, special effects (though often criticized), and the chemistry between the lead actors.
