Jarowair

The Jarowair people are an Aboriginal Australian group traditionally associated with lands in southwestern Queensland, Australia. Their territory is situated within the broader cultural and linguistic region of the Maranoa.

The Jarowair language, also referred to as Jarowarga, is considered to be either extinct or highly endangered. Details regarding the language's structure and vocabulary are limited due to the paucity of surviving records and speakers.

Historical records indicate that the Jarowair people experienced significant disruption and displacement following European settlement in the 19th century. This included frontier violence, dispossession from their traditional lands, and forced assimilation policies.

Contemporary understanding of Jarowair culture and history is largely reliant on historical records, anthropological studies, and oral histories passed down through descendant communities. Efforts are ongoing to document and revitalize remaining aspects of their cultural heritage and to maintain connections to their ancestral lands. More research is necessary to fully understand their social organization, traditional practices, and relationship to neighboring Aboriginal groups.
