SS Pontic

The SS Pontic was a passenger and cargo steamship built in 1894 by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the White Star Line. Initially named the SS Lyndonia and intended for service between Liverpool and Boston for the Dominion Line, she was quickly acquired by White Star before entering service.

The Pontic primarily operated on the Liverpool to New York route, serving as a mid-sized, dependable vessel for both passengers and freight. She was notably involved in transporting livestock in addition to general cargo and human passengers.

In 1903, the Pontic was sold to the Leyland Line and renamed the SS Cestrian. Under Leyland Line ownership, she continued to serve on North Atlantic routes.

During World War I, the Cestrian was requisitioned by the British government for use as a transport vessel.

Following the war, she was returned to Leyland Line, but her service was short-lived. In 1919, she was sold to Italian owners and renamed the SS Sardegna. She served until being scrapped in Italy in 1923.
