Franco (General Hospital)
Franco Baldwin was a fictional character on the American ABC soap opera General Hospital. He was initially portrayed by James Franco from 2009 to 2012 in a guest-starring role. Following Franco's initial run, the character was recast with Roger Howarth, who portrayed him from 2013 to 2019. In 2019, the role was then taken over by Tom Berenger briefly before being resumed by Howarth until the character's death in 2021.
Franco was introduced as a performance artist and serial killer, initially presented as a deranged individual connected to Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst). His early storylines involved elaborate schemes and psychological torment, including holding several characters captive.
Later, after suffering from a brain tumor, Franco underwent a dramatic personality change. He sought redemption for his past actions, developing a complex relationship with Elizabeth Webber, whom he eventually married. His character arc then focused on his attempts to overcome his past, establish meaningful relationships, and be a positive influence in the lives of those around him, particularly Elizabeth's children.
Franco's storylines often revolved around his troubled past, his relationship with Elizabeth, and his ongoing struggle to prove that he was a changed man. He became a respected figure in Port Charles, running an art studio and mentoring young artists. His character's death in 2021 brought an end to his redemption arc and impacted numerous characters on the show, particularly Elizabeth and his close friends.
