Diwan-i-Am (Red Fort)

The Diwan-i-Am, or Hall of Public Audience, is a structure located within the Red Fort (Lal Qila) in Delhi, India. It was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan around 1639. The Diwan-i-Am served as a place where the emperor would address the general public, hear petitions, and conduct court proceedings.

The hall is a large rectangular structure made of red sandstone. Originally, it was richly decorated with inlaid panels of precious stones. It features a series of pillars supporting a flat roof. A raised alcove at the rear of the hall, known as the jharokha, served as the emperor's seat. This allowed him to be elevated and visible to the gathered crowds.

The Diwan-i-Am was strategically located within the Red Fort to facilitate easy access for the common people. It was a crucial space for maintaining communication between the ruler and his subjects. Over time, the Diwan-i-Am has witnessed significant historical events and served as a symbol of Mughal authority and justice. While much of its original ornamentation has been lost or removed, the Diwan-i-Am remains an important architectural and historical landmark within the Red Fort complex, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
